Average Faces of Native American Tribes

These different phenotypes of American Natives were created by Amud using a bunch of composite images from historical photos. They take into account all the variety of appearances that there are among the different regions of the USA.

“One thing I noticed is that while each region has its own typical look, there are individuals who look somewhat out of place,” Amud explains. “For example, you could find a Sioux who looks more typical for Apache. That is why I believe it does not make sense to divide the tribes up into specific phenotypes like “Silvid” or “Pacifid” as the old anthropologists did.”

A phenotype refers to the observable physical, biochemical, and behavioral characteristics of an organism. In humans, phenotypes encompass a wide range of traits, including physical features like height, eye color, and hair color; physiological functions like metabolism and heart rate; behavioral patterns like personality and intelligence; and biochemical characteristics like enzyme activity and hormone levels.

While a person’s genotype (genetic makeup) provides the blueprint for their development, environmental factors also play a significant role in shaping their phenotype. For example, identical twins, who share the same genotype, may exhibit slight differences in their phenotype due to variations in their environment, such as diet or exposure to sunlight.
